The Consultation That Keeps Clients for Years, Not Just One Visit

In 39 years I have watched thousands of first appointments, and I can usually tell inside five minutes whether that client will still be around in five years. It has surprisingly little to do with the haircut. It has everything to do with the consultation.

The two-minute mistake

The average consultation goes like this: "What are we doing today?" "Just a trim." "Okay!" Ninety seconds, cape on, water running. Efficient, friendly, and completely forgettable. That client got a service. She did not get an experience, and services are interchangeable. Experiences are not.

What the great ones do differently

They sit down

Before anything touches her hair, sit at her level and talk face to face, not through the mirror. It takes three minutes and it signals something she almost never gets: undivided attention.

They ask about life, not just hair

"How much time do you actually have in the morning?" "Are you growing this for something, a wedding, a season?" The answers change your recommendation, and the questions tell her that your advice is about her, not about your speed.

They diagnose before they prescribe

Touch the hair. Name what you see. "Your ends are holding old color from about two appointments ago, so here is what I would do differently this time." The moment you explain the why, you stop being a pair of hands and become the expert she quotes to her friends.

They set the next milestone

A great consultation ends with a plan that extends past today: "Today we reset the shape. In five weeks we refresh the face-frame. By fall you are fully grown out." A client with a plan has a reason to come back. A client without one has a reason to shop around.

The loyalty math

My personal client loyalty rate ran 97%, and I promise you it was not because I never had an off day with scissors. It was because every client in my chair felt like a project I was personally invested in. That feeling was manufactured, deliberately, in the first five minutes of every appointment, and then reinforced every visit after.

The full in-chair experience, from hello to rebook, is exactly what I teach in the Magnetic Guest material of the challenge. Find the next free week and steal the whole thing.
